What’s on in May 2023 at the National Library

Expand your mind at the National Library this May! Highlights include the inaugural event for our newest flagship lecture, the Ann Moyal Lecture, a celebration of all things dogs with outdoors ‘pawtrait’ photography sessions, and a book launch and discussion around The Voice to Parliament Handbook.

2024 Scholarship and Grant applications are open

Researchers, academics and creatives are encouraged to apply for scholarships and grants offered by the National Library of Australia. Applications for National Library of Australia Scholarships and Asia Study Grants close Monday 26 June 2023. Applications for the National Folk Fellowship (offered jointly with the National Folk Festival) close Monday 19 June 2023.
 

Julie Ryder: Embroidered maps

Wednesday 3 May | 5.30pm to 6.30pm

Join the Friends of the National Library for this presentation where textile designer Julie Ryder will talk about her research into embroidered maps.
 

Pawtraits: A Celebration of Australia’s Dogs

Saturday 6 May | 12.00pm to 2.00pm

In partnership with PhotoAccess ACT, we are celebrating the launch of NLA Publishing's new book, Australia's Dogs with free outdoor 'pawtrait' sessions at the Library.
 

2023 Ann Moyal Lecture: Professor Genevieve Bell

Monday 8 May | 6.00pm to 8.00pm

Join us for the inaugural annual Ann Moyal Lecture, to be delivered by Professor Genevieve Bell. The Ann Moyal Lecture has been established with a generous bequest from the late Dr Moyal and her estate.
 

Book launch: The Voice to Parliament Handbook

Wednesday 24 May | 6.00pm to 7.00pm

Join us for the launch of The Voice to Parliament Handbook. Listen to the book's authors, Indigenous leader Thomas Mayo and acclaimed journalist Kerry O'Brien, as they talk about the Voice to Parliament and how it might function.
 

Coffee with the curators: Joyce Evans

Thursday 25 May | 10.30am to 12.00pm

Curators Dr Grace Blakeley-Carroll and Shelly McGuire present insights on the Library's new collection-in-focus display, featuring highlights from the Joyce Evans Archive.
 

Book launch: What Birdo is That? A Field Guide to Bird People

Wednesday 31 May | 12.30am to 1.30pm

Join Professor Libby Robin as she launches her latest book What Birdo is That? A Field Guide to Bird People. Professor Saul Cunningham will be introducing the event, and Professor Robin will be joined in conversation by Dr Leo Joseph.
