Today, the National Library is celebrating five years of the National edeposit service (NED). Created in collaboration with state and territory libraries, NED allows all kinds of Australian publications to be collected, accessed and preserved for future generations. This includes books, journals, magazines, music, pamphlets, newsletters, novels, children's stories, self-published poetry anthologies, maps, government reports and more.

Legal deposit has been a law in Australia for over 100 years, with the Copyright Act 1968 stating that one copy of every Australian publication made available to the public is to be given to the National Library. In 2016, this legislation was updated to include electronic publications, and thus the need for a single system for electronic deposits was born.
